A President House official stated in a news statement that the appointment was made by Section 101. Kam Tessori is a gold merchant, who left the MQM-P in 2017, and later came back to rejoin the party as deputy convenor who is today elected governor of Sindh.
Imran Ismail member of PTI left the position on April 11, leaving it vacant. Imran Ismail, the governor of Sindh at the time, announced his resignation after Imran Khan was ousted from the office of prime minister after losing a no-confidence motion in parliament, citing his inability to address Shahbaz Sharif with a “sir.”
On the 11th of September, the MQM-P summoned a meeting of the joint committee of the party to consider the destiny of Tessori, who had been reinstated as the deputy convener of the party, disappointing many party officials and workers in the process.
Tessori’s reinstatement into the MQM-P was decided upon during a meeting presided over by Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Convener of the MQM-P. The meeting was attended by about 15 members of the coordination committee, including Tessori.
Senior party figures were missing, though, and later some of them publicly voiced their disapproval of the party’s choice to reinstate Tessori.
It is important to remember that Nasreen Jalil was initially proposed for the position by MQM-P, the coalition partner of the current federal government when offered the chance to select someone from their ranks.
However, following the recommendation of Jalil’s name, the PTI in particular began an online campaign of abuse against her, pointing out that she had written a letter to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad back in 2015 requesting that they take note of the “lawlessness of the law enforcement agencies” and use their position “in resolving the issue for urban Sindh.”
When questioned if the letter was the reason Jalil’s name had been rejected, MQM-P member of the Rabita Committee Zahid Mansoori responded in the negative, saying that the party had caused the current delay in naming a candidate for governor.
