There are Italian towns where you can buy a house for the price of a cup of coffee, regions where you can relocate for free, and now there is a territory where you can travel for free.
The northeastern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia will pay for guests’ railway tickets if they come from any place in Italy. If that’s not incentive enough to get you on board, the area will also issue you a card that entitles you to unlimited admission to museums, free use of the public transportation system, and other savings.
Is that the sole grab? There must be a minimum two-night stay. That said, this area is home to some of Italy’s best beaches, mountains, miles and miles of wine country, and old cities of art.
PromoTurismoFVG, the regional tourist agency, will reimburse domestic train prices for visitors arriving in Trieste, Udine, and the seaside resorts of Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro beginning today and continuing through May 31 of 2023 to promote eco-friendly travel.
Travelers can board state-run Trenitalia trains, which include everything from the standard regional lines to the Intercity and the fast Frecce lines. You must reserve a package at a hotel that is a part of the project, which must include lodging; when you reserve a two-night package, the cost of the return train fare will be subtracted from the total as a discount. Additionally, guests will receive a free FVGcard, which entitles them to free and discounted admission to museums and guided tours.
Trieste, though, is the region’s capital and arguably its most well-known city. This charming coastal town is heavily influenced by Slovenian and Austro-Hungarian culture. From 1382 to 1918, it was a part of the Habsburg monarchy; it was only after World War I that it officially joined Italy.
If you’re into beaches, Lignano Sabbiadoro on the Adriatic is one of the more well-liked locations in the area, while Grado is referred to as the “mother of Venice” because it was built on a network of lagoons.
With destinations like Forni di Sopra in the Dolomite Alps mountain range, skiers are very adequately catered for. Given that we are in Italy, food and drink are also highlights. Those who enjoy a glass of white wine will travel to Friuli, while cheese and food lovers will find much to enjoy at the omnipresent local Montasio.
Be advised that the return tickets must go to and from any of the following five stations: Latisana-Lignano-Bibione, Cervignano-Aquileia-Grado, Trieste Airport, Trieste Centrale, or Udine. Additionally, depending on the location, you must book more than three or five days in advance and stay in one of the participating hotels. Bank holidays in Italy are not included in the promotion.
