“Gutted” Gareth Bale couldn’t hide his disappointment after Iran scored two goals in injury time to put Wales in deep trouble at the World Cup on Friday.
Iran won by 2-0, thus Wales must now beat England in their last Group B game and hope that other results go their way if they are to have any chance of making it to the round of 16.
“We’re devastated. There is simply no other way to say it “Bale, the captain, said. “We fought till the very last second. It’s one of those things that is difficult to accept, but we must recover and go on.”
At the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Wales was clinging to a point after Wayne Hennessey’s dismissal in the 86th minute. However, Rouzbeh Cheshmi’s scorching strike in the eighth minute of additional time broke their resistance.
Following an embarrassing 6-2 loss to England in their opening match, Iran’s Ramin Rezaeian scored the second goal in the 11th minute of extra time to secure a famous victory.
“The red card changes the game completely. We allowed the first one in, and it doesn’t matter about the second,” added former Real Madrid player Bale. “We must immediately pull ourselves up. We only have one game left, so we need to enjoy it.”
“It will undoubtedly be challenging. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the other game.”
